Another previously unreleased recording from the legendary Stax Studios. This time we’re paying tribute to the great Randy Brown who sadly passed away in 2025, shortly after what became his last performance.
The Newcomers’ version of “I’m Afraid Of Losing You”, was found in a box of discarded studio tapes – even Stax Records were unaware of its existence. The track has been recorded by some true greats of soul music; originally recorded by Quiet Elegance on Hi Records in 1972, the Mad Lads on their 1973 Volt album “A New Beginning”, Betty Everett on her “Love Rhymes” album on Fantasy in 1974, and then again in 2015 by Otis Clay and Billy Price on their collaboration CD album “This Time For Real” released on Bonedog Records. It’s such a great song, composed by the great Darryl Carter and the little known Helen Washington, and every version do the composers proud. To our ears the Newcomers’ take sounds like it was an earlier recording of the song. It features the incredible lead vocal of Randy Brown which layered over Lester Snell’s dramatic arrangement to lift the tempo and bring up the percussion takes the song to a whole new, spine tingling direction.
We’ve flipped this awesome version with a track from one of Randy’s favourite albums by The Soul Children, the gorgeously soulful “We’re Getting Too Close”. A track that truly should have been THE single release from the album. As the saying goes – “good things come to those who wait”. The waiting is now over.
