Trainspotters will notice instantly that the backing track here is made up in the main by the stunning Jones Girls’ soul anthem “Nights Over Egypt” (Philadelphia International Records). Bloody marvelous, over two decades on and even when the tempo is taken down a beat or two it sounds stunning. So you know how the backing works, what about Stone’s talent? Well, those of you feel Luther Vandross or ex-Capital Records star Freddie Jackson might find this rather amazing, as elements of both those artists can be found in this great vocalist’s armour. The B-side, called “The Whole Thing”, almost requires a second spin, just to make sure this is not actually Luther. A stunning slice of soul.
